Why I Support Ben McAdams for Salt Lake County Mayor

Quite simply, Ben is the better choice. And, for Utah to do well, our biggest county needs good leadership. Ben will provide that leadership.

I am a Republican. Ben, of course, is a Democrat. But, my politics are driven by ideology, not tribalism. I am drawn to the Republican side, because I am more comfortable with Republicans’ approach to budgeting. In the Senate, Ben and I have worked together (and, at times, apart) to craft a few budgets for the State. In this race, I have more trust with his hands on such a big and important budget.

Also, Ben really is an extraordinary person. Whether we agree or disagree on an issue, he is great to work with. Leadership requires the ability to truly listen and interact with others. Salt Lake County is a wonderfully diverse place, and I believe Ben will work effectively with everyone.

I love this state. I feel extremely blessed that I can be a part of it, raise my family here, and play a part in governing it. The Salt Lake County Mayor race affects the entire state. Some in my tribe won’t appreciate this endorsement, but, the fact is, I’m looking out for my district and my State. Utah needs Ben to win.

A wonderfully brave thing to do in such a polarized time.

This seems like another popularity contest endorsement. Name one thing that McAdams has done that could be considered acceptable to conservatives or one way that his track record shows he will be good fiscally, socially, or morally for SLCo. I understand the few SLCo. community mayors who are endorsing for “self preservation” (knowing that McAdams will “give” them stuff that will help them show their constituents how much they got for them) but can’t quite understand this one, other than likely trying to get the support of these folks and some others in behind the scenes future commitments. But anyway you look at it, this is not a principled endorsement as McAdams does not stand for what Urquhart typically claims to represent. Disappointing.

To Mr. Bludworth and conservatives who share his opinion – McAdams has done something fiscally, socially and morally to merit serious consideration. He plays well with others! I want that attribute more than any others of my elected officials. That attribute is most definitely social and moral and will be very good fiscally as he listens to more than one side in making financial decision for the county.

If you are a moderate Republican don’t let the idealogues on the Right mislead you in this race. Utahans and Salt Lake County will be better served by someone who will lead by listening and collaborating. McAdams is the better choice.

Thanks for the commentary. Rick, but I am an ideologue on the right! That ideology, over pure partisanship, is why I am willing to support Ben, the better candidate (and field the “you’ll never be elected dog catcher!” calls).

To Rick Pike – so your best defense of McAdams for Mayor is that he plays well with others? I thought you were joking but that may be the best attribute of your unqualified candidate. Playing well with others is a small factor of the equation, but obviously not a determining factor. McAdams plays well with others because he is a politician and that’s what they MUST do to keep their jobs. He plays well with other people money that’s for sure. I think the first comment hit the bulls eye.

McAdams says he is different, and I agree with him because he is different from me. I am a fiscal and social conservative.

As a Republican, I have to agree with Steve U. I have watched Ben McAdams in the Senate and I think he has done more than Mark Crocket has. I gave “my sides” candidate a chance to win me over and he has failed miserably – most notably by the fact that he seems to think the county ENDS at 5600W. I have seen very little of him and his campaign west of 5600W.
