When I wrote that Ben McAdams is the better choice for Salt Lake County Mayor, I just wanted to state my piece on Ben and let it be. I didn’t want to say anything at all about Mark Crockett—and I didn’t. No big deal. But then Crockett had his campaign manager call to harass and threaten me for endorsing Ben. So, I’ll go ahead and share an aspect of my thinking, which Crockett and his campaign clearly ratified with the nutty, unhinged phone call.
I do think Ben McAdams is outstanding. That stands alone. On the other side of the ticket, I simply don’t think that Mark Crockett is stable enough to be county mayor. He can’t handle disagreement in a mature way.
My interest in Salt Lake politics started with Rocky Anderson. I thought Rocky hurt the capital city and the State, by being unnecessarily polarizing, hostile and emotionally immature. Salt Lake County (and the State of Utah) doesn’t need a Rocky from the right, and yesterday’s unbridled call has me further convinced that would be the case with Crockett.
Sadly, you sound more reasonable all the time. Maybe there’s some bipartisan hope at the local and State level despite the brain-death plague that seems to have swept the R-party.
You just made sure every effort will be made to keep you from higher office…
Steve, good for you – your opinion, nor the truth, shouldn’t have to be courageous but in this instance it appears it is, it was, and it is appreciated.
Well said! Thank you! I, too, am crossing over to vote for Ben McAdams this time. He just seems so darn…reasonable.
There’s a good reason that Ben McAdams has formal endorsements from eight Republican Mayors of Salt Lake Valley cities. Those Mayors all had to deal with Crockett and his tirades when he was on the County Council four years ago.
You just made sure that an enormous contingent of reasonable Republicans who have been WAITING for someone to start speaking up will make every effort to support any effort you make to seek higher office . . .
Well said, Senator!
Wow! I’ve heard that Mark has been bullying and buying support, but this is too much. Please don’t let nutcase extremists stop you from doing what you think is right! You give people like me strength to stand up for a good man, no matter the “D” next to his name!
Well done Senator! I hope other leaders follow suit and stand up for what will be best for Utah, not what will keep them on good terms with party insiders. That is what we elect them to do! There are great people in both parties, and no one should be punished for being vocal about who they believe is the best person for the job.
Obviously you feign a level of disinterest in the campaign and just want what’s “best” for the county. I hear you are ill and are retiring. Sorry to hear that. In departing you are without pressure from the party and won’t be looking to further your political opportunities, but at a time like this there isn’t much integrity in getting revenge. The portion of the undecideds in the race don’t know you, your endorsement or will factor that in when they vote. Hopefully they, in their disinterest will pull the lever for a straight GOP ticket. And good luck with all that.
Kudos Senator.
If there is a rumor that I am ill and retiring, it is false.
you are such a prideful scumbag. why would you support anal warts and anal herpes?
lot of democrats posting on this blog. trying to make it look good and honorable, but it isn’t good or honorable. it is a very sleazy move and we don’t know the truth for a couple of years. steve, you are a disgrace.
Steve, you are entitled to your opinion about whom you want to endorse in a county race nearly three hundred miles away. Hey, it’s your right as an American. So the real question is one of the following; 1) What does McAdams offer you in a state wide race (we all know that’s what you really want. i.e. 06’ against Hatch, and your interest in making the AG’s office an appointed one. Too bad Swallow had plans well before you.) 2) Do you see Crockett as a threat to a future state wide run? After all a sitting mayor of the largest county in the state would a formidable foe in a convention fight?
I’ll be honest #1 was a complete shot in the dark. McAdams gives you nothing of gain in a state wide race. So let’s really break this down. You want a state wide or federal office, duh. You don’t have the money to self fund a campaign; guess you should have been an ambulance chaser. So you need to tap into someone with access to lots of sweet mullah. Enter Alan Dayton. Now if anyone has an axe to grind against Crockett its Dayton. Mark was one of the first to publicly ask Nancy Workman to bow out of her race. And he (Crockett) pretty much gave Dayton and all the other lobbyists the boot from SLCo. And Dayton has been very busy this political season. Alan, it’s pretty much known that you (with a little help from Jeff Hartley) instigated the convention letter against Chris Stewart for Clarke and now he’s attempting to get even with Crockett for getting him booted from two jobs. Besides, McAdams would, with loving arms let the lobbyists back into SLCo.
Steve, this is not the way to win friends, influence people and win your coveted statewide or federal office. Your enemies list is getting longer then Nixon’s. You have Orrin, Shurtleff, Stewart, and Crockett. Anyone I’m missing?
A few online sources list this blog as your campaign website. Do you have any plans to post anything about why you are seeking re-election? I hoped to find out some definitive information on your stance on various issues by reading your responses to the Political Courage Test on Project Vote Smart’s website, but according to the site you have refused to participate. What is the best way for voters to become informed on you as a candidate? Thanks for your time.
Steve, I’m really just appalled. I mean how can you sleep at night? Your ability to “support” and endorse someone that is 300 miles away just shows you have secret combinations behind the scenes to get gain. It’s showing in your politics, your work as a greasy lawyer, and how you can make up lies about business men in this community for your own personal gain. Grow a conscience.
