Meeting Schedule to Discuss Higher Education Ideas

Last week I posted some ideas to improve higher education in Utah. I’ve had the opportunity to discuss the ideas with representatives of each of our 8 higher education institutions and with many citizens, students, higher education employees, and legislative colleagues. I’m learning a lot. Below is a list of upcoming meetings. As we get closer to each meeting, details will be supplemented. Some Ideas to Improve Higher Education in Utah

First Draft INTRODUCTION AND INVITATION TO PARTICIPATE A September 2011 New York Times article on college completion rates highlights the Utah system of higher education – to exemplify poor completion rates. Utah, of course, does not benefit from such attention. More importantly, Utah’s citizens do not benefit from such poor results. Utah must take steps to improve its system of higher education. The good news – no, the great news – is that significant improvement is readily obtainable with relatively simple adjustments. Despite its flaws, Utah’s system of higher education is not broken. Where Utah decides to shoot for excellence in higher education, it generally hits the mark. We know what excellence is, and we are able to obtain it. It is time to raise our ambition and our expectations, in order to achieve excellence in our entire system of higher education.
